Background of the Study
Discourse coherence is a vital aspect of effective communication, ensuring that messages are logically structured and easily understood. In Calabar, Efik language radio interviews serve as an important medium for disseminating information and engaging audiences in cultural and social discussions. The coherence of these interviews is achieved through the use of transitional phrases, thematic consistency, and a well-organized narrative flow (Udofia, 2023). Radio interviews in Efik not only inform but also entertain, relying on the skillful coordination between the interviewer and interviewee to maintain a conversational rhythm. Studies have shown that clear discourse coherence enhances listener comprehension and retention of information (Okon, 2024). The interactive nature of radio interviews further necessitates a seamless flow of ideas, which is particularly challenging in a live broadcast context. This study evaluates the factors contributing to discourse coherence in Efik language radio interviews, examining the interplay between linguistic strategies and cultural nuances in Calabar. By analyzing recorded interviews and listener feedback, the research seeks to identify best practices for achieving and sustaining coherent communication in radio media (Udofia, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of discourse coherence in radio communication, there is limited research on its manifestation in Efik language radio interviews in Calabar. Existing studies often address broader issues in radio discourse without focusing on the specific mechanisms that ensure coherence in the Efik context (Okon, 2024). This gap hinders our understanding of how radio practitioners manage the challenges of live communication, particularly when balancing cultural idioms with modern broadcasting demands. The study aims to address these shortcomings by investigating the specific linguistic and structural strategies that contribute to discourse coherence in Efik interviews, thereby providing insights into effective communication practices in this medium.
Objectives of the Study
To identify key linguistic strategies that promote discourse coherence.
To analyze the structure of Efik radio interviews.
To assess the impact of coherent discourse on audience engagement.
Research Questions
What strategies are used to maintain discourse coherence in Efik radio interviews?
How is narrative flow structured during live broadcasts?
What effect does coherence have on listener comprehension?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of discourse coherence in Efik language radio interviews, offering insights that can improve broadcasting practices and audience engagement. The research findings will inform radio producers, communication scholars, and cultural practitioners, enhancing the quality of live media interactions. By focusing on the Efik context, the study also contributes to the broader understanding of language-specific challenges in radio discourse (Udofia, 2023; Okon, 2024).
